Brushes Fear Me

Earlier this week I popped in to my local GW to pick up a couple of new drybrushes.  Here’s a comparison between them and the ones they’re replacing.

Let’s zoom in for a closer look, shall we?

I believe that my problem is threefold.  First of all, I use drybrushing all the damned time, especially to highlight, as I like the rough look it gives miniatures.  I know, I know, I really have to experiment with a more varied portfolio of techniques but at heart I am a very lazy individual.

Secondly I suspect that there’s something to be said about the quality of these brushes.  I don’t want to start yet another round of GW Bashing but I’m certain that the older GW brush lines lasted longer.  I have invested in a set of the Ichiban Studios brushes and without mincing words, they are fucking spectacular; I got them through the Kickstarter but these days you can get some here.  The Ichiban brushes do not have a drybrush and I’m certainly not going to use the others in the set for something that heinous so I think I’ll try the Army Painter’s range to see what they’re like.

Finally, I think that I’m not as disciplined at cleaning my brushes as I really should be.  Like every other sane individual, I use The Master’s Brush Cleaner and Preserver however I think that I’m just not using it properly when it comes to cleaning my drybrushes.  I’ll pay extra special attention when cleaning these to see if it makes a difference.

My main problem is that while brushes aren’t really that expensive, it’s still money that’s being diverted from my hobby budget which would be far better spent.  If anyone out there has any tips, tricks or hints please feel free to comment below.  🙂
