New Bretonnians Sooner Rather Than Later (or Never)?

A while ago I got all excited by the now-false rumour that GW would be updating my Warhammer Fantasy army of choice.

Recently there has been chatter hinting at the worrying possibility that my beloved knights’ days as a full army may be numbered. I took this with a grain of salt (as one must do with all rumours) but I was worried as no other Fantasy army really appeals to me.

These rumours have been in part fuelled by the recent withdrawal of key models from the GW website, their absence meaning that now new players cannot easily build legal armies.

Today I popped into my local GW during my lunch break to pick up the latest White Dwarf and got talking to one of the staffers about this situation and was told not to worry as the whole Bretonnian range is due for an update ‘soon’. He also hinted that there are new plastic knights on the horizon.

Again, what does ‘soon’ actually mean? We were told for years that the Dark Eldar were coming soon and look how long their second completely new codex took to arrive.

While this doesn’t completely allay my fears, at least it gives me some (hopefully not) false hope that the most noble of all the armies may one day soon bring truth, justice and honour back to the Old World.

January 2014 GW Releases

Pins of War (certainly among others) have published what appears to be GW’s January release schedule. You can read their article here however if like me you’re feeling a bit lazy you can simply look below.

Got to say that I’m glad that the hungriest creatures this side of me at an all-you-can-eat buffet are finally getting some love as their last codex was an absolute travesty. I still have fond memories of Tyranid Attack / Advanced Space Crusade so I have a soft spot for these critters.

As it’s rumoured that the new Imperial Guard codex is due in March (Imperial Guard March, geddit?) I really hope that this paves the way for the return of the Genestealler Cults in the form of a codex supplement that combines the two armies. I live in hope!

For The Lady! New Bretonnians this year?

Bretonnian Army Book

I can barely type I’m so excited but there’s a chance that my beloved Gallic Knights might be getting a new army book and models this year!  This evening Bigred posted this on the Bell of Lost Souls forum:

Viewing a retailer order sheet, Bretonnians are no longer able to be ordered from Games Workshop at this present moment. Following the usual cycle , this indicates that there is a new rulebook on the horizon with some new models to come. We assume this would be in the November/December release slot after the Inquisition Skirmish game is announced in October at Gamesday UK.

Distributor sources verify the upcoming WHFB release shipment, described only as “a human race”, with but would not confirm a release dates.

While this in nothing concrete (i.e. take with the implied truck-full of salt), this army is crying out for an update because they just don’t work in the 8th edition.

You can find the whole thread here, I’m keeping my fingers crossed 🙂

GW’s schedule through to January 2014

The usually reliable Faeit 212 has posted a list of what to expect over the next seven or so months from our favourite Nottingham overlords.  Here’s the shimmy, just remember your sackful of salt:

August: Lizardmen, Farsight supplement
September: Mystery Box (or Blood Bowl as it’s traditionally called / hoped)
October: Space Marines, White Scars Supplement, possibly another Marine Supplement
November: Dark Elves and another supplement, probably Marines and probably Ultramarines
December: Hobbit
January: Dwarves, and something else.

You can read the full post here.

Aside from my obvious excitement about the possibility of a 21st century iteration of Blood Bowl, what’s really getting my juices flowing is the prospect of some new Dark Elf kits.  Before the release of the current Dark Eldar codex I used parts from Black Ark Corsairs to add variety to my Kabalite Warriors and Wyches, the thought of mixing some new kits with the current Dark Eldar range pleases my inner-Haemonculus immensely.

The possibility of something else in January is intriguing,  there have been wildly speculative rumours for some time that the Imperial Guard might get a sixth edition makeover however I really don’t think they need one as yet, maybe in a year or so. The other 40K option would be a revisit of the derided Tyranid codex and given that these poor extra-galactic critters can’t even ally with anyone now I think they should be shown some love sooner rather than later.

However if you look out with 40K you’ll see an army begging for an update, the noble Bretonnians.  The truth is that a massed heavy cavalry charge just doesn’t work as well as it should in the 8th edition, especially coupled with the fact that every army thus far has received at least one decent large kit.  I’d dearly love to give my pluckly little gallic knights some much-needed oomph in the reasonably near future, especially as I still have a campaign to win 😉

First Apocalypse Trailer Lands

Must be a week to pay day as GW’s released the first of the trailers for the forthcoming Apocalypse reboot:

Is it just me or is it a wee bit more obtuse than their usual pre-announcement trailers?  It’s not bad, it just doesn’t fill me with excitement or the urgent need to rush out and find as much information about the new release as possible.

That said, and I’m probably vastly over-thinking this, but didn’t the imagery of the trailer hint at the possibility that this release will also incorporate a new set of rules for Planetary Empires?  It’s probably just me.

Well, this was unexpected…

I guess this means pre-orders this Saturday (May 25th) for a release the following weekend.  I might pick the book up since the limp-wristed point-eared frackwits* were my second proper army back in the dim and distant days of the second edition but I don’t think I’ll be starting yet another new army just yet.

Eldar Wraithknight – WD image leaked

It’s been somewhat quite on the Ramblings front of late so I’d thought I’ll get back in to the swing of things by reposting this image that appear on Warseer a few hours ago.

wraithknight

Not too sure what to make of this, I was hoping for something a bit more wraithboney but I’m sure it’ll still sell like hotcakes.

Fulgrim – First Confirmed Picture

Shamelessly stolen from the Bell of Lost Souls forum, here’s the first confirmed picture of everyone’s favourite post-human deviant.

I really wish I were going to the HH Weekender as I’d love to get my hands on one of those Davinite priests for my Chaos army.

GW 2013 Master Release Schedule

04/02/2013 Leave a comment

Bell of Lost Souls have published what claims to be GW’s release plan for this year, here it is:

January: Warriors of Chaos
February: Dark Angels
March: Chaos Daemons / Daemons of Chaos
April: Tau Empire
May: High Elves
June: Eldar
July: Apocalypse
August: Lizardmen
September: Blood Bowl
October: Space Marines
November: Dwarves
December: Hobbit
January: Tyranids

You can read the original post here.

I don’t know about you but I think that they’ll still bump the marines up the schedule and let’s not forget that the Mystery Box may still not be Blood Bowl, but for the life of me I can’t think what else it could be.

Unless of course, they go mad and re-release Dark Future…

Next up, Codex Space Marines?

03/31/2013 Leave a comment

In their regular rumour roundup, Bell of Lost Souls discuss reports that everyone’s favourite post-human super soldiers may have unceremoniously jumped ahead of the Eldar in the release queue.

Is this hot air, or can there be some substance to this? Certainly it’s inevitable that the favoured sons of the Emperor will be receive a refresh at least within the first half of the sixth edition’s life cycle so in many ways now’s as good a time as ever but I must say that I’d rather the Orks and Eldar get some love first as their codexes are certainly older.

That said, it’s undeniable that marines are the most popular army and certainly have been put at a slight disadvantage rules-wise compared to the Dark Angels and Chaos Marines. It would also be a guaranteed big seller and since GW’s financial year runs June to May this will certainly enhance their Q1 results.

Most tellingly though is the imminent release of the new Apocalypse ruleset, along with what looks like the long-anticipated plastic Thunderhawk, having a shiny new codex to take full advantage of this would certainly be of benefit.

Finally, such a move would hopefully determine the fate of the Black Templars. There have been conflicting rumours for that seems like forever that they might be re-absorbed back into the core marine codex and it would be good to finally lay these rumours to rest.
