Astra Militarum Infantry Squad

05/13/2016 2 comments

I’m participating in a doubles tournament tomorrow and I though that I’d dust off my old Imperial Guard Astra Militarum for the occasion, especially after painting the Wyvern last month.

I’ve not used my guard in a very long time, so long in fact that aside from the Wyvern a Commissar, and a restored tank or two, I’ve not painted anything for these chaps since around 2010/11.  After looking at the hordes of infantry I painted since returning to the hobby in 2009, I realised that it would be nice to challenge to paint a fresh squad for the event, mainly to see how far I’d come as a painter.  Here’s the result.

1st Squad 1st Platoon

I kept the scheme as close as I could to my original models however this time I deliberately used nothing but the current range of Citadel paints (with the honourable exception of my venerable pot of Snakebite Leather).  I also decided for the first time ever to attempt some freehand painting as thus far my guardsmen didn’t have platoon and squad identifiers.

Now, compare this against the squad below from 2009.

Old Squad

As you can see, I’ve got a bit better. In particular I’m confident enough to attempt to paint the smaller sculpted details such as eyes and insignia.

While I am tempted to strip and repaint my two older platoons, I think I’ll attempt to tidy up and provide unit marks for now.  When I have time 😉

Finished on time, for once!

Astra Militarum Wyvern 01

Astra Militarum Wyvern 02

Astra Militarum Wyvern 05

Astra Militarum Wyvern 04

Astra Militarum Wyvern 03

I painted it in seven sub-assemblies; the hull, the two crew, the turret, the trigger assembly, and the two Stormshard Mortars.  I think I’d have gone crazy trying to paint it fully assembled!

Also, this was the first time that I painted one of my Astra Militarum units using the current range of GW paints.  I was initially worried that the new ones wouldn’t match the old range but I’ve been pleasantly surprised.  Plus, and this is heresy I know, but after painting this I think I prefer Agrax Earthshade to Devlan Mud…

Finally, why did I start my Wyvern Squadron with the number 2 gun?  I originally was going to make this the command unit but I couldn’t find enough parts to make a gunnery officer in my Bitz Box.  Never mind, my birthday’s coming up and I expect to bulk out my guard’s fire support very soon.

Astra Militarum Wyvern – WIP 2

It’s getting there. This is about five hours of work over three days, I’ve not had much time this week but I think I’ve spent it well.

This evening after I returned from my weekly RPG session (currently we’re playing Legend of The Five Rings, since you asked) I finished the spotter and attached him to the vehicle’s rear platform.

The next stage is the wash it, apply some decals, then weather.

Then I can start on the Stormshard mortars 🙂

Can’t believe it’s been almost two years since I last added to my trusty old Imperial Guard!

I picked this up a while back and have been looking forward to building it throughout my recent foray into She Who Thirsts

This was a fantastic model to build, as I have more Chimeras (Chimerae?) than is decent I’ve not encountered the updated kit before but it was so much easier to assemble! It’s also a touch thinner which will certainly help storage-wise when I build my third platoon later this year.

As you can see from the picture, I’ll be painting it in sub-assemblies but I think it should be a fairly straightforward job. This’ll be fun 🙂

Mixed Gender Militarum Tempestus Scions

09/03/2014 2 comments

Look, I’m not dead!  It’s been exactly a month since my last post, the longest delay ever in the ignominious history of this pokey little blog.  There are a number of reasons, the most pressing of which is that my father is nearing the end of his valiant battle with cancer so understandably my mind has been, and will continue to be elsewhere for a while longer.

That said, I think it’s important for my sanity to attempt to keep as much of my normal life going as possible so I decided to get back on the horse and hammer out a few hundred words of rubbish.

This past week I’ve been slowly progressing my Heldrake, it’s almost finished and will be the subject of a proper post later.  As such my mind turned to my next project, I received three boxes of Militarum Tempestus Scions for my birthday back in June and I’m tired of them languishing on their sprues under my desk.  I had the notion of attempting to build a mixed-gender platoon so scoured the interweb for some 28mm female heads in berets and discovered these heads made by Statuesque Miniatures.

I ordered a couple of sets and within four days they arrived.  The quality of the sculpts are fantastic, I’m usually not a fan of small metal components after shedding blood, sweat and tears trying to get the old Imperial Guard heads to fit onto my plastic Cadian torsos however the sheer quality of these sculpts certainly encourages a little extra hard work.

However, as you can see from the photo below, the projects stumbled before it could get started.

They’re unfortunately ever so slightly too small when compared to the male heads so for now I’ll have to look elsewhere for compatible components.

All is not lost though as I’ve earmarked these heads for use with my PanOceana faction for Infinity as they’ll add some extra variety to my Fusiliers.

Will I order from Statuesque again?  Almost certainly, the quality of their product is fantastic and, time and finances permitting, I’d love to collect some of the Resistance Fighter range.  The prices are very reasonable and delivery is very quick, while their range is limited at this time, I can’t wait to see what else they can come up with.  Definitely a company to watch.

Can’t believe I actually got it finished today. I’m not too happy with the face but it’s a damn sight better than more of my previous attempts. After all, it is a learning process 🙂

Now, onto either some possessed Chaos Marines or my Taurox Prime. Decisions, decisions…

Officio Prefectus Commissar – WIP

Those of you who know me on Facebook will most likely know that due to ‘business pressures’ my holiday next week has even cancelled. As such, my planned Big Project is being pushed back for a while so instead I’ve decided to press ahead with this chap.

Here he is after half an hour’s work.

I love Commissars (as a manager in the civil service, I can certainly relate to them 😉 ), indeed the original metal Commissar models from the late eighties first inspired me to put down the blood red power armour and pick up the bloodied and torn flack jacket.

I’m going to enjoy this 🙂

Leman Russ Resurrection – Part 5 – Finished!

It’s done!  I’m really pleased with how this has turned out, and in time for Miniature Monday 🙂

And to show you again what it looked like before I got to work.

Leman Russ Resurrection – Part 4

05/18/2014 3 comments

After taking some time off for a family bereavement, I thought the best thing to get stuck into was my erstwhile Leman Russ revamp.

Today I managed to get the base layer down and made a start on blocking out the metallics.

I decided to manually apply the basecoat as Catachan Green doesn’t agree with my airbrush (well, much of this is due to my general ineptitude with all things airbrushy) and I wanted to practice applying an even flat colour over a large area.

So far so good, this won’t be a work of art but at least it’ll better match the rest of my armour.
